if you refer to MySQL 4.1 then yes you an do that. (I assume you are speaking
about the server side configuration).

How do I use a characeter set different from the server default?
Server is configured to use latin1 as default character set.
But for some occasions, I'd like to switch to big5 characeter set.
I tried to edit ~/.my.cnf and added
[mysql]
default-character-set=big5
But show variables still
