What version of FreeBSD do you have installed? Was it upgraded from an
earlier version? If so, was the ports collection upgraded as well?

I know I'm about to get in trouble with the FreeBSD people, but here goes:
I'm not a real big fan of FreeBSD's /usr/ports/ thing. My suggestion would be to
download the source in a TAR ball, unpack it, run:
% configure
% make
% make install
If that doesn't succeed, hollar back with
