See linuxconf, mysql is installed as a service which can be started
manually or automatic via linuxconf.

BTW, are you downloading the binary distribution or source distribution?

usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld --user = mysql &

Have a look at /mysql/bin/var/hostname.err.log
