Thanks for your reponses but I tried both of the
suggestions below and still had problems.
I killed mysql and then I used
"/etc/init.d/mysql start"
I was able to use mysql --user=mysql and get into mysql
However when I tried to create a database I get
"ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '@
