did you run the mysql_install_db script to create the mysql database and

I installed it per the INSTALL-BINARY readme file.
When I try (from /usr/local/mysql) issue:
bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
It starts and immediately stops mysqld. The .err file contains

Not sure why that should make a difference as the daemon is trying (it
claims) to write to /usr/local/mysql/var.

When I start mysqld using /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld start it starts ok alhtough when I
say mysqld status I get the following error :
mysqld dead substatus locked
i cannot connect to the server at all
please help
