Just to mention that Lubuntu has the same problem.
We use also update-alternative system with LXDM (to have LXDE genuine
theme, and Lubuntu theme), and it's working quite well. It would be
unfortunate if all Ubuntu flavors share the same display manager, but
can't set their settings easily.

It's impossible for you to have the same issue as this bug for the same
reason if you are up to date on your mythtv backend.
What is the output of
dpkg -l mythtv-backend

I'm experiencing a similar problem (with a pcHDTV HD5500) even after
installing the PPA (via mythbuntu-repos) and installing all the updates.
I get this error in the backend when trying to switch channels in LiveTV
(NTSC).

This is overkill to create packages for only one conffile, and probably a mess
to deal with
#173 Fantastic! After 3 years we finally have a proper solution! The
previous method of commenting out those 4 or 5 lines would have a nasty
side-effect where my PC would completely freeze after booting up every 2
or 3 times, so hopefully this doesn't do that :)

packages, the mythnews is nearly empty. Is does not contain the mythnews
plugin binary.
The same is true for the mythweather package
