There is a script out there called findtvcardoptions.sh that you can use. It will cycle through all the possible tuner settings for the bt8x8-based cards and display the result using xawtv. Once you find the one that works, it will insert the appropriate lines into your /etc/modprobe.conf file.

Buy one of those cheap PC Remote's with serial IR Receiver on e-bay for like 7 bucks, throw the remote away, and get a 15-2116 from Radio Shack. I've done it three times for different machines. Here's a link to what I'm talking about:
