I have two questions about this:

Ripping a DVD will not work at all (it doesn't even go
into the screen to pick which files to rip). Is this

mtd is in mythdvd not mythtv (on gentoo anyway)
Do you have mythdvd installed? What is in the mythdvd rpm? you can tell
by typing;
rpm -ql mythdvd
