There's still a bunch of files with snmp in their names in /usr. Right - those will almost certainly be part of the Ubuntu-provided version of the package. I would tend to recommend that you remove this before trying to compile the software yourself. (It's perfectly possible to run the

New user here. Trying to install version 5.7.1, and I get an error cannot find -lperl. Per the INSTALL file, I went into the perl subdirectory, and ran make there. Now I'm getting a message that my versions of perl aren't identical. I'm getting the impression that I'm on the wrong track here.
