I have setup PPP via netcfg to activate at boot time, but get a message
"FAILED trying in background", when in fact the modem has dialed and
connected, not a big one but would just like to clean things up.

2 Hard Drives. Both 15.3 GB 7200 RPM Western Digitals.
1st Hard Drive: 10GB Windows NT(4.0 and 2000. They can be on the same

The startx problem has to do with networking, in my case, with ADSL. My

I have just installed Mandrake 7.0 air on a k6-2
233. I installed it fine on my k6-III 400 with a PS/2 mouse.
the 233 has no ps/2 port. So I use a serial mouse.
I have both a genius ( mouse model : 3 ) and time computers mouse ( whatever
that is in reality I dont know ) and I cant get

Linux does not recognize .exe files. Do you own the Linux version of it? If
not, then you're going to have to get the Linux version, as the Windows version
will not work on Linux at all.

Dear all,
I re-start my computer today. While I try to login from the KDE login
screen, the screen just flash once and seems the X reset, then bring me
back to the login screen. I try to login as a normal user , or root,
both
same. I can login to the text console but just can't login to my KDE
I can't help you with Quake.
I am just curious as to how you overcame your Mandrake install problem.

Can you give us the exact output of what the lilo prompt was?
For example did it do:
LIL and then hang, or LI and then hang?

Skip the padded cell but check you BIOS setting first. Is the serial
ports set up to AUTO ASSIGN IRQ's and port address? If yes, change it to a
set irq/port address. Linux doesn't do well with the auto-assign on ports
in bios. (talking from experience).

For me, the DSL setup was the easiest part of the installation - I set it up as if
I were setting up a local lan - no dialup at all. All I needed was my IP addresses
(my own, the gateway and the DNS servers) and I was pretty much set. You would use

2.3 Open Linux. I plan to burn another copy of Mandrake when I get to work
tomorrow. I found out that my CD-ROM is bad. Then I will take another stab!

How difficut it is will also depend on your service provider and the type
of modem.
Two cases in point are mine and Philomena's. She had no problem, but mine
will not work in Linux. First it is a USB moden, but even if it wasn't they
have not even come up with Win2000 drivers much less

Yep. I exit just like in Windows, esc, yes , then x freezes. This also
happens when I CNTRL,ALT F# out of X, but the freeze happens when I try to
go back to X from the console...not really a freeze, but I get X-server
errors and then bounce back to the console.

came along with a readme file which told me how to install. Usually you
have to open a shell, change to the directory with the program files
(after decompressing it) in it and then type "./configure", "make" and
