I know this is a mandrake list, but I have a couple of old dells like that
and I install Debian with a few floppy images and the rest a network install.

Well, I went looking and found a program called bootitng from Terabyte
Software. Used it, resized the ME partition, and created a Linux partition.
Seems to be pretty neat software.
