[newbie] Where did all my bash commands go?

I changed the PS1 for my bash promt. I put it in the .bashrc file in my home dir. After I did that it seems like some of the bash commands got lost. I am trying to compile a program and make and all its descendants come up with "command not found". The proggie I'm trying to compile was

I just picked up a Sound Blaster 16PCI hoping it would be old enough to be automagiacally detected and configured. Its detected sure. Boot-up says its loaded the right module and all. No error messages, and Hard-Drake has it listed as an Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI with kernel module ex1371
