I just installed ML9. During setup I choose the option of a single user. I
set the root correctly, etc. (I had M* so I just repeated what I'd
previously setup)
Now, on boot, the sys gets to the user login prompt and stops. It does not
proceed to open the program. So, after giving al the time

I have ordered a set of distro disks for M9 and expect it to arrive in a
day or so. My box already has M8.2 installed.
What is the procedure to install M9 without losing my existing data and
settings?
Does M9 play well with others and share toys?

As interesting as Konquerer is, I greatly prefer Mozilla and want to make it
the default under Mandrake 8.2. But I don't see any setting that allows that.
Can someone suggest how to do that?
Thanks

As a newbie who is impresssed with and wants to learn Linux Mandrake but
remains totally at sea due to more than 20 years of DOS and Windows, I would
find it a great help if I could find classes or seminars or whatever
that would get me sufficiently grounded to start real learning.

I'm running Mandrake8.2 and using KDE.
At the bottom of my screen I noticed an icon has apeared in the form of a
small lock. When I clicked on it the screen went black and a prompt appeared
that wanted my user password. Since I don't recall what the user pw is (and

Derek, I appreciate the advice. Based upon the certainty with which you
state it, it appears you know what I need to do. But I am not able to
follow the instructions without more details.
Please understand that I am humbled by all these new Linux terms and

Now that I have M8.2 installed and KDE running, I am frustrated by my
inability to find a screen resolution setting. I need 600 by 800.
I am aware of the fact that this can be set during M8 installation. I have
seen the config dialog during earlier unsuccessful installs but it did not
come up

I have an external USR Sportster 56k F/V modem. Works fine. At first I
thought not because, as coincidence had it, my ISP was down as I was trying
to confirm it was installed and functional. To make things more
complicated, Connect (KDE's internet dialup) has it's own volume control.

Thanks for the good questions that offer some promise of a possible

I have had many weird things occur, some that seem impossible. It's hard to
