Same problem with me. But I solved the probl;em by
setting the monitor with extended VGA 800x600 at 60 Hz and 600x480 at 72 Hz let
it works first, then you can cahnge it later on by using the DrakConf. Try it
and let's see..okay ?

I think you better check it out in Linux Hardware Compatibility that you can
find in http://www.linux-mandrake.com or in http://www.redhat.com because it
should work with Windows 98 but I don't know in Linux.
