Have you tried Cubit Accounting? It's a South African product that has
accounting and payroll function and is GPL. See www.cubit.co.za.

I do know that as he is a sole trader, a payroll feature is not required.
However his computer skills are quite limited, and he is old so he doesnt (or
'can't' to use his own words) learn a new system. He had to be taught to use
Quickbooks.
