Hi All,
I have a strange issue with some Japanese files that gets processed by
an application. Time to time, application fails due to 'invalid
characters'. Invalid character is something like '^@' (without the
quotes). Interesting thing is that when I look at the file with vi or
cat it, it

something to do with enabling UTF-8.

Seems a bit small to me - 61 bytes? This is what I get when I do the
same thing on my LM8.0 system:

Hi,
I installed Mandrake 8.1 a couple of days ago and have run in to a
strange problem with less.
It only gives me a directory listing not the file, this is the same for
root and a normal user.
Any ideas?
Ciao,

Nope, it isn't. I've tried seceral other files as well. I even made a

How are you actually invoking less? Sounds like you are doing something like

That is extremely strange.
My feeling exactly :-)
Do a 'which less' and then 'ls -al wherever less is located'. Make sure
that less isn't linked to ls or something similar.
/usr/bin/less
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 61 jul 20

Have you looked to see if there is an alias for less?
Yes, and if I understand things correctly it shouldn't affect both root
and normal users as /home hasn't changed from my previous distribution
while /root is new.
Unless mandrake overwrites
rpm --erase less
rpm -i less-358-14mdk.rpm

Problem solved.
There was a stray 'ls' in my .bashrc, why this caused less to behave
badly is beyond me as is the reason it is there, but removing it helped.

Could some of you guys be less prompt to send an

Think of some of us with slow connection and not much

know, for a weekend is too much. Worse, with very
little information.
Thanks.
