Thanks. This worked and I am now in X. Now if I could figure out how to
get my network card running. It is a DLink DFE-530TX+ Rev. D2. I went to
the network configuration as root but my card is not among the options
in the drop down menu.
Any ideas on this?

My old machine died a while back (motherboard failure) so I just took
the hard drive out of it and scrapped the rest. I just put that hard
drive into another machine. It boots up fine and I can log in but that
is all I know to do. I tried 'startx' but that didnt work. I imagine
