Because you need to tell the system what to use to execute the commands contained in the file. Check /etc/rc.d/rc.local and /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit and you'll find the same at the top of them. Probably the same in the scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d/. here is a point Steve.. why not just add the

I unfortunately have a HP 722c printer. I am trying to install ppa. I downloaded ppa to my home directory, extracted the archive, changed directories, and compiled the program (to the best of my knowledge). There are still some files I need to add. I have some questions
