I did
# mkdir /mnt/tmp
and then
# mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/tmp
and then found /etc/lilo.conf at /mnt/tmp/etc/lilo.conf
Vi was acting a little sickly, but I was able to delete the bad stanza.
