I'd suggest trying startx (no quotes). That should load your default
Before you issue 'startx'.. You should run XF86Config (slackware)..
xconfigurator (redhat/mandrake?)... or XFDrake (Mandrake).. anyways, you
need to configure X before you can run it (properly).. or else you will
probably have problems with your mouse/video/etc etc..

It is quite possibly your PIII 500EB processor, I know I had some problems
with it in a Win98SE box. I think it is because the processor is so new that
the architecture is different enuff to cause problems.
