That's what I did but I guess that I
answered one of the questions to the installer incorrectly. Did you just go
with the defaults for every

I am a newbie indeed, have not really upgraded anything before,
should i try this at all?
where would one find the binaries? I have mandrake 8.1 - should
i use rpms?
