Go to http://www.unionbuiltbox.com/modem for instructions on how to
set your modem up in L-M. This worked for me on a 3Com/USR 5610
hardware modem.

You may have a Winmodem. Does Windows call it a HCF modem? You can
go to http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html and look for your
model no. You'll also see the hardware modems there, internal
external.

I've never run NT but in 95 /98/Me you make a startup disk when you do
the initial load. FDISK is on my startup disk and it can be run from
there. Also, you may have a boot disk that came with NT.

I'm using a 3-Com (USR) MD-U56P2977 PCI hardware (they told me)
MODEM. The BIOS in the 'pooter assigned it to Com 5, according to win
dev mgr. Trouble is, X or Gnome deal only with Coms 1 - 4, so I can't
reconfigure the SW in a GUI. Sadly, I don't know enuff yet to do it in
console mode.
I'd suggest you boot up with your Startup diskette and get into the help
routine. You'll have an option to check/renew the registry and you'll
have CDROM support.

I logged in Linux with KDE and tried to access my CDROM, I did with no problem.
Then I shutdown KDE with the CDROM
I ran into that today. I just installed a new computer: Gigabyte
7IXE, AMD Athlon 750. One HDD on IDE 0 as Master, other on IDE 1 as
Master. I told the BIOS to boot from IDE 1 when no boot floppy
present. Stuck in the LM Installation floppy and instaleed LM on IDE 1
(hdc1 in LM). At end
The best advice I got on this was to install using the vgalo option.
This got X to work and then I could get into the video and screen
resolution without its crashing.

Has anyone tried the burner fix in the tutorial in LM.com with good
results? I gave it a shot and it didn't work.

Yes but more than that. Because of a foulup in the install routines
(sez the tutorial) for LM 7.2 Full, I can't access the reader either.

(er, this may not be exactly right) that's supposed to get the linkage

I have an old 33.6 Kbs USR hardware ISA modem in my box. I installed
it as a plug and play device and made sure that my BIOS was set for no
P'n P OS installed. That way the BIOS could assign all ports and IRQs.
There's a procedure for setting up the hardware in the book but the ISA

I ran into this same problem. I couldn't find the file in question by
any file search method in the book. I also got an error msg that I had
two dialers running at the same time. Couldn't find that file either.

I'm a Linux newbie but I've been building and selling custom PCs for
years. I'd agree on building your own. My advice is to go to the AMD
board and get one of the AMD-recommended MOBOs for an Athlon CPU. Also,
stay away from the all-in-one boards. Better to have plug in sound,
MODEM,
mmand line. Once I did this, my video came up and
worked pretty good. Hopes this helps, 'cause I know how frustrating this
problem can be. I worked on it for three weeks in my spare time.
