[newbie] Modifying a partititon

When I boot Mandrake 7.0 it gets to the command line login with the penguin and cycles over and over. I rebooted in linux 3 mode and was able to login. I typed df and saw that my / partition is 100% full. These 2 things I was able to do from the posts I've read - thanks guys!! Now I need to

I have just installed Mandrake 7.0 with the standard install. I am trying to install Word Perfect, Abiword, Star Office and Siag. None of these programs are installing. If I want to do a rpm off of the cd it installs just fine. When ever I do a ./configure on some of the programs above it
