I have an 82, 750.  I love this bike, wanted it after the first time I saw the commercial.  Bought it, but always felt it could have used one more gear on the trans.  I'm thinking of change the gears on the rear sprocket, 43 is stock,  have the choice to go too 40 or 38.  Any one else do this?

If comfort is primarily your goal, yes. My 750 is definitely not a rolling sofa. But I knew that going in and actually prefer a firm ride (with cars as well) and the more controllable handling that goes with it. The Nighhawk's strong suit is its all-purposeness. It doesn't do anything exception

Do a google search for motorcycle gearing calculator, or similar. I have a bookmark for a great one I'll have to look later when I get to my computer. That will tell you the rpm change. Keep in mind your chain length may change, also wear profile too. Generally for every 3 teeth on the rear = 1 too
