Yeah I was thinking of replacing the clutch as well. It's weird that after
a year of using that car oil, it would suddenly act up on me. I had a
different problem before where I go to 2nd gear from 1st and it would
sometimes drop down to neutral.

If you mean does it have two outer metal skins, the answer is no.

On a ride today, my transmission locked up in the upper gears. No way to get
into 1,2 or neutral. The problem is there with the engine running or turned
off. Is this repairable at a reasonable cost? Or is the end of my trusty
Nighthawk's long life?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about the MMO, but i still +1 to everything else graham
sugested I dont like to admit but i use the hard down shift as my
indication of oil change. So i would point at oil. Might as well replace
the clutch plates while you have the engine.apart too

Jeff, here's what happened to me and a 700S (Javier referred to the problem I
had). Yours sounds like a clutch problem rather than a transmission problem so
check your clutch plates and springs while you have the engine apart. Even
changing oil might take a while to see the results. I used R
That's where I admit I screwed up. for about a year I was using regular
synthetic blend motor oil for cars SAE 10W40 I think. After I had the
problem I was looking around and they suggested it could be the oil so I
replaced it with SAE 10W40 for 4 stroke motorcycles. Even after 2 days of

What kind of oil did you used? I think Graham had a similar problem on one
of his 700s which was solved by using the proper oil (maybe some additive
to it?).
Javier.

I just used a simple anti-seize lubricant, they had a picture of it being
applied to the spark plugs so I bought it lol. I was thinking it might be
the oil since it has been 2-3 months since I replaced it. I replaced it the
day after it stopped shifting and I used the bike for 2 more days and st
I used it for at least 4 months after replacing the cables. I usually leave
some slack because my fingers aren't too long. I adjusted it to the proper
tension to get the maximum clutch motion but it still wont shift down.

Sealant on the spark plugs? I hope you used something that will let you get
them back out. Well did you try adjusting the clutch cable before pulling the
engine. Did it have the correct oil level, and was the oil fresh? Now that it
is apart just check your parts to make sure they are in spec,
Should say or, and done, not it and down lol

You said you replaced the handle bars and cables after crashing, could be a
binding it maladjusted cable. As shifting up can be down without a clutch,
down shifting is very hard with out a clutch.

I got myself a 92 Nighthawk 750 last year. I rode this bike all year
throughout winter. It ran fine, no problems other than only doing 35mpg.
Since I'm pretty broke because I'm going to school and all, I decided to
fix the bike myself. For the most part I've done a decent job of keeping it
in go
