Update on this:
I opened up the clutch a couple weeks ago. No gunk, no wear. Looked
practically new (but with only 12K on the clock, I guess it should).
So I closed it back up...
I've got the idle down from 1500 previously to 1000 now, and that made

I know what it isn't, but I'm not sure what it is.
I arced the solenoid with a screwdriver and the starter turned over. (=It's
not the starter.)
I swapped the solenoid/starter relay with one on another bike, and I
confirmed it's OK.
I tested the clutch diode and it's OK.

Hello Nighthawk Lovers!
I was given a 1985 NIghthawk CB450SC from an uncle. It's not in great shape
but is looking to be a project bike for me. I have a million questions but
my first project is putting on a new ignition switch. I went to a great
bike shop today and was told I should figure out
Bummer. Good travels.

1. Change clutch fluid
2. Test and service choke
3. Test and service throttle
And a test ride between each to isolate what system may cause what symptom.
It may be a week or two, but I'll post results as I get them.

The sticking throttle could be just that! It could actually be sticking
right at the throttle mechanism on the handlebar from years of crud (grease
gone bad). Mine was!! Take it apart and use a degreaser to clean away the
crud and apply a spray of white grease on the bar and in the white plastic
You mentioned Seafoam. The smoke could be from that and will go away when the
"gunk" is gone or that tank of gas is used up. If the throttle was just
sticking, you would possibly feel that in the trip. Look at the linkages at
the carbs when it is revving and push the throttle closed to see if
Underneath the handlebar on the throttle side, there should be an L-shaped
tube with an adjustment nut that holds the throttle cable away from the
tank when the handlebars are turned full right. If that nut is loose, it
can allow the tube to move back and forth as the bars are turned during
