Hi there, I'm from the UK and have an '85 CD250 (same engine) that has *
exactly* the same problem - i.e. warm it up, head off, it loses power when
you put the throttle on, then surges, then I'm up and running. Only ever
happens in the first minute or so. Once engine's been running it goes away.

shopping, come back and it will be fine.
That is normal behavior. Leave the
I have a theory that 99% of internet questions boil down to is this
normal?.
Thanks Allen! I'm going to head out this afternoon and leave my choke on.
I'll report back

On cold days I used to:
1. Start bike
2. Wait for RPMS to jump up to 3K, and lower choke till it went down to 2k.
3. Gear up, keeping an eye on the RPMs and adjusting back down to 2k when
needed.
4. Once choke was about 3/4 off I'd hop on the bike and ride away.
5. Occasionally pull in the clutch
And that was your recipe to cure the slump / surge on start up? I like the
science - I'm trying it!

Side question: How do you have your bike running without being on it? My
bike won't start unless the sidestand is up and will kill the engine if I
put the sidestand down. Do you just lean it against a wall or something?

depending on the bike you should be able to leave it on side stand and just
pull in the clutch and after it starts let clutch out. your not in gear. it
will stay running.

Put the bike in neutral. The sidestand switch only kills the bike when it
is in gear. If yours kills the bike when in neutral then you have a wiring
issue.

yea either the side stand switch or the clutch switch would be my guess?

Yep, do the traditional Honda riverdance of trying to find neutral.
Same thing happened/s on my Deauville, Transalp and 125 Varadero! My
lawnmower works like a dream though...
