I dunno, I threw on one of those plexiglass ones they sell at Cycle Gear.
Noting particularly ugly about it and no too visible unless you squat down
and look under the tank. I like the ounce of prevention.

Even if it doesn't have a vacuum shutoff there should be a filter
inside the petcock. The auto shutoff types have two, one that slips
over the feed tube (for the reserve function) and the other inside the
bowl.
I'd take it apart and clean it before deciding to add an in-line
filter.
