Sounds like brushes.
Starter rebuild for around $30 in parts and 1/2 hour to 1 hour of your time.
Search ebay for starter rebuild kits for your year/model.

Ok, so I have a feeling the starter is fried. It smells burnt and is really
hot. There's clicks when I hit the ignition but that's it.

BTW don't start the bike with an amp meter in the circuit because you'll fry it.

Mine has four. Fuse holder is 3 dollars . Box of Atc fuses another 3. I have
replaced three of four fuses already. These car style fuses...atc are really
solid...and never fall out!

Yes. That fuse was loose rusty and intermittent on mine. If yours was the
same taking fuse out and replacing it might make it work temporarily. You
could replace all fuses with ATC style fuses, including one near headlight
as they get old.

Put a volt meter across the battery with the engine running, rev the
engine to above 3k - 5k rpms. It should read over 13 volts, maybe
13.5 or more. If it stays at 12 or whatever your fully charged
battery reads with engine off (12.5 e.g.), probably even showing
discharge, then it's either
Stefano,
Their are several threads (some pretty heated) about the charging system on
these bikes. There's plenty of reading there but the long and short of it is
they don't produce enough electricity to keep the battery charged at lower
rpms. 2500 or greater is where you need to keep it, the lengt

Robert,
As far as I was able to deduct from working on the bike there is a main fuse
next to the battery and a fuse box under the headlight. Are you talking
about the main fuse?

I had a similar problem with my 1982 cb450. It was the fuse block which I
had to replace. It works best to put in ATC fuses of exactly the same size
and they fit easily under the fairing. I no longer have any intermittents!

Hi All,
A lot of weird electrical stuff going on this week. First the headlight left
me now she won't start.
So, she starts fine after battery is fully charged with a charger (battery
is also brand new). But after a 15 minute ride and I turn her off, she won't
come back to life. I hear clicks, but
my 750 has a small metal fuse that if you dont know about it you wouldnt ever
know if its blown.

I'd start with the basics and check the fuses. Those bikes are also known
for the plugs on the back of the fuseblock not making good contact . If
wiggling them makes it kick then cleaning them wouldn't be a bad idea. A
service manual would probably be a good buy for you.

I had to replace my battery cables. Too much corrosion had gotten in. It

I just bought a 83 650cc Nighthawk, and one of the issues the former
owner had is it wouldn't start. I put a new battery in it, and you can
jump the starter, it will turn over but not start. In fact, when the
key is turned on, there is nothing, no lights, starter or nothing.

I recently had an intermittent no start on my 92 NH750, with 77m miles on it.?
When it wouldn't, all lights, etc worked but only a click when I hit the button.
Turned out to be a bad starter. To diagnose, when the bike won't start, put it
in gear, and rock it back and forth to move the engine ju
