Just try this once. When cold, apply full choke, no (or tiny bit) of throttle
and try it. Sounds to me like it may be the to clean the carbs, though. Oh,
and new spark plugs, if not already. That can really help.

charger on cold nights. 20 w 50 is what I use usually and it is thick oil for
cold weather. I try to go lighter oil for the cold.

Sounds like too much fuel, not enough air.
What sort of shape is your air filter in? That's the easiest place to start.
