I bought a new USB barcode reader years ago. The computer just thinks it's a keyboard, so there's little effort to using it. The funnest part was on a Mac where it insisted that I type a "k" on my new keyboard so it could figure something out about it, and I had to print a single "k" in a barcode

Figured I'd point out that there are projects out there that turn any camera into a barcode reader. Benefit there is that the hardware turns into a $9 component or less. Also it has the benefit of reading 2d barcodes. Could be that your check out procedure is to wave the tool barcode in front of th
