[nlug] VPS Hosting Recommendations

2020-09-24 Thread Andrew Farnsworth
I just had my hosted server die a horrible and severely fatal death. (i.e. NO way to resurrect the hardware) So instead of buying new hardware and finding someplace to host it I have decided it would be cheaper, at least in the short run, to find a VPS hosting company and just lease a VM. Theref

VPS hosting comes in a couple of different flavors. What OS you can use and what you can do on the box has a lot to do with how they are setup. Unless you're getting into the nitty gritty with doing strange stuff with the networking the portal software they give you is probably more important

You said VPS, not dedicated server, right? I use vpsdime.com for my VPS needs currently. They run as cheap as $7/mo, for what is a very adequate server, in terms of CPU. If you need a lot of storage space, I'd look elsewhere. My favorite go-to site for finding a VPS is http://lowendbox.com, whi

I've been using Linode since it was based in Nashville and mentioned on the NLUG list. They've since moved their headquarters to suburban Philadelphia but they're still rock solid. On Thu, Sep 24, 2020 at 4:17 PM Andrew Farnsworth wrote: > I just had my hosted server die a horrible and severely

I'm open to dedicated server, but cost is usually much higher or you provide your own hardware. I'm open to doing this as storage is much less expensive if you are providing it yourself, but it has other drawbacks. I don't really care if I get hardware or a VM as I'm not doing anything particular

I have been using Digital Ocean for a couple of years now with no complaints. I used RimuHosting for over a decade before that. Both are great, but RimuHosting is more expensive because they offer premium support as part of the basic service. It's only worth it if you actually need their help. Jos

I have 3 dedicated servers with hetzner.com. They're a German company with data centers primarily in Germany and Finland. Their prices are pretty competitive, especially if you use their server auction ( https://www.hetzner.com/sb) On Thu, Sep 24, 2020 at 6:22 PM Andrew Farnsworth wrote: > I'm o

I will reiterate my recommendation for lowendbox.com. Search for "storage VPS", and you should be able to find some offerings with the size that you want. I don't have a specific recommendation, as that's more than I currently use. My largest VPS is only 250GB, for a Nextcloud instance, and I'm

I'd suggest Digital Ocean, Google ComputeEngine VM, or Amazon Lightsail. Any of those offer a solid product for cheap, depending on your needs. On Thu, Sep 24, 2020 at 5:44 PM Josh Lefler wrote: > I have been using Digital Ocean for a couple of years now with no > complaints. I used RimuHosting

If you care about anything free as in freedom related you'll avoid anything by Amazon and Google. On Fri, Oct 2, 2020, 5:49 PM Tommy Kelly wrote: > I'd suggest Digital Ocean, Google ComputeEngine VM, or Amazon Lightsail. > Any of those offer a solid product for cheap, depending on your needs. >

I did look at Amazon and Google as well as others. I ultimately decided on Greencloud VPS due to price and their offering. I was setup and running within 15 minutes and have been happy with them since... though it has only been a short time so far. Andy F On Fri, Oct 2, 2020 at 6:50 PM Patrick
