I forgot to mention one thing which is easily overlooked: Your EPS (or
PDF) figures also need to have the fonts embedded. If you use metapost,
TeX does so; otherwise you need to instruct the program which creates
the EPS/PDF to embed the fonts.

For complex score, I think the best choice is to use the best of the
two (fantastic) sw, LilyPond and ConTeXt:
I typically render the score with lily, and prepare a (more or less
complex) layout with ConTeXt

same behaviour as in 2006-10:
The checking, if a LilyPond buffer/temp file has changed, works only
with the old Perl texexec, the recent Ruby version creates/processes
the files only if they're missing completely
