Yeah, exactly what I was going to say. Generally when you buy a 40GB tape
(for example) it is quoting how much you could fit on there if you achieve
a 2:1 compression ratio - which you never will. We use DLT4000 tapes here,
which are rated at 40GB, compressed at 2:1. We get around the low 30's
I've 'adapted' Steve's scripts to do the following:
1. Check to see if rdisk is in the right place (c:\winnt\system32\) and if
not, copy them there from a different share
2. Run rdisk
3. Map a drive to the location i store the erd's
4. Check to make sure the directory is there to copy into, and

Yeah, we use it enterprise wide (8 Sites) on Nokia Hardware and find it to
be perfect. Especaially on the Nokia boxes, there are different scaleable
(can I spell?) options, and we are looking into their DSL Firewall for some
remote users in Europe. We have inter-office VPN's setup between the
If you want a black box affair, rather than software on NT or Win2K, then
take a look at http://www.xstop.com Not a bad thing, and it can do
different levels of filtering for different users (but be careful in it's
implementation - great with a RADIUS server, not otherwise).

Have you tried looking at your switches/hubs to make sure there are not any
performance issues there - full duplex on one side and half duplex on the
other?

Hey Guys,
Steve Clark's (the genius - if I'm ever in the same city as him, I'll buy
him a beer) script for putting computers ERD's onto a different server has
made me wonder if anyone has some idea of how to do this for Win2K?
What I'm talking about is a script that automatically runs an rdisk
Just thought of some more trouble-shooting procedures:
Can you ping valid IP addresses on the internet (like your Internet DNS
servers)?
Can you resolve valid URL's to their IP addresses (like www.yahoo.com)?
The comment below about the gateway on your internal NIC is my best guess

A little off the topic here, but how do you find Panda? We use Norton AV
for desktop and server protection, but have Panda for Lotus Notes
protection (I think it's a good idea to have a double layer sometimes).
Panda was suggested by our Notes Admin guy, and it has not worked correctly
since!
Jason,
This sounds a lot like a problem we had here with our VPN - users in
Munich/Paris not being able to get to thier servers when they connected to
the London office via VPN. So, can you tell me...:
What kind of device do you have in between all the subnets?
What are the IP addresses of
The Windows Update site is good for most stuff, but you really need to use
the Hot Fix Check tool that MS spits out. Otherwise you're missing out on
alot of stuff. I'm afraid I can't remember the URL though...

It all depends on what you want to pay, and how you want to control it. I
like Norton AntiVirus myself, but we also have Panda AV as well. Both are
very good, and both can do automatic Definition file updates via a central
server that pushes out updates to the rest of your network...
Cheers
Hey Guys,
I've been told that DHCP can be made to assign differnet subnets of ip
addresses to clients (somehow - some group membership maybe?) so that we
will have some 'virtual' subnets in our network. All very strange and new
to me - any ideas out there?
Here's the scenario (in case you need
Hey Charlie,
I dunno if this is classified as an 'easy' way, but I'd do it like this
(and I'm working from memory here since I'm using Win2K now):
Logon to the WS as the domain user, and logout again (once the new profile
has been created). Logon to the WS as a local administrator and either
Yeah, that's what I thought... damn
The filtering box can use radius accounting packets but our firewall
doesn't support them, and that was the main way of doing the filtering
levels. Oh, and it's the guys that make the filtering box that have

A bbit of a tangent here - how do people out there cope with users in the
field with laptops that connect only infrequently? I don't want to have to
rely on them to do the updates themselves (users are not the most
trustworthy people for this). They connect back to home either via a
