Curious, can other Apps use
I have a number of sites over a T1 (or greater) and I have not heard any
complaints about WSUS killing bandwidth. I thought BITS was supposed to
work during idle time, but from your experience I might be mistaken.
If you use Microsoft Configuration Manager you have more control. Some
on the
to find out that information.

not sure, but I do know this -
I have 8 locations in 5 states, all low bandwidth connections back to me
(512k - 768k).
WSUS updates NEVER slow down/clog up the circuits.
Now, on the other hand... we do use this anitivirus application called
Vipre which is not so nice with bandwidth restrictions
Your comment about Vipre is interesting. I pick a local workstation at
each site, give it a static IP, and make that the distribution point.
It can be a user's PC as long as it stays powered on. That will cut
down your A/V defs/agent updates.

How do I go about finding out if our IGD's have/use UPnP and support the
counters?

IME the only IGDs that support UPnP are the consumer crap at Best Buy et
all.
Cisco, SonicWALL, FortiNet, Watchguard, etc will not EVER support UPnP -
it's a security nightmare waiting to happen.
If the remote site is connected to HQ via T1, that means you have a pair
of T1 routers. There's a
they are using that to copy the definitions/updates to the
clients, and that's just horrible.
