Seen this before.
Do you have the Dell Open Management tools installed? If so it will report
what firware the drives are. Likely you will find that you have mismatching
firmware and that will cause the drive to fail.
Cheers
I had a bad set of firmware back in the day with a 2600 (or it might
have been on the 220s enclosure attached to it... don't remember
which)... it would drop a good drive out of the array instead of the
failed drive and attempt to rebuild with the bad drive. Thank god for
backups.

LESSON TO ALL...
Next time, try to call Dell Server Support first. Despite the age of my
2650 experiencing a drive failure, they still worked through the problem
with me (which included finding links to the diagnostic tools which were
no longer generally available), told me specific firmware a
I'll check the drive firmware - this is possible. Likewise the backplane.
Thanks for the recs.

There might also be backplane firmware and drivers.

Faulty backplane. Had it happen a couple of times on 2650 and the older
4400/4300. Nothing to do but replace or migrate if you don't have a
contract.

I'd try shutting down the server, reseat the controller and all the
cables that connect the controller to the drive backplane.
I'd also blow the dust out of the sockets
