One more question:
Do the newer kernels really stop booting with "MMU:mapin_ram done" (at
the bottom of the screen?) or are there some lines somewhere else on
the screen like "MMU:setio" and "MMU:exit"?

I read the Apple Developer Note for the PowerBook 500.
It is indeed nearly the same machine as the PowerBook 2300.
What is the exact type of your PB500 and what expansions does it have?
And as you already got a nearly successful bootup I think it will be
possible to get it working.

I tried booting with the newest kernels and with mklinux and it stops
on a "MMU:mapin_ram done" message the screen flashes briefly twice
and then nothing else happens.
