The Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch 2010 season came to an end today with no
birds sighted on light W-NW winds.
A total of 6304 raptors were counted in 115 days from Aug. 24 through
Jan. 3. This marked the third highest total in the 22 year history
of the lookout. New seasonal records were set for
Yesterday, I tried for the Lark Sparrow (4th x) without success, in addition
to missing the R/L/Hawk seen by Byron Young. I did however, get to see an A.
Kestrel, a N. Harrier, and when I pulled over to check out 5 W-t Deer for
"racks" , flushed 3 x that # of E.Meadowlarks. Cheers, Bob
An American Bittern was spotted directly across from the entrance to "Sand
Bar Beach" in Hampton Bays along Dune Rd. (just west of Neptune's Beach

A short-eared owl was seen this evening, heading west and hunting,
between the Town Fishing dock area and Tiana Beach Pavilion. The
bird was primarily on the bay side of Dune Rd., but did cross over to
the ocean dune side occasionally. I watched it between 5:00 and
5:10pm, and last saw

Hi all,
Due to overwhelming interest from nearby counties, we have decided to expand
the eBirdathon 2011 contest to *also include Rockland, Orange, Putnam,
Sullivan, Ulster and Dutchess counties*, in addition to the eight previously
announced. The contest will now span all of Kingbird Regions 9
I haven't seen any recent posts on the EPCAL LASP so I figured I'd let folks
know that I observed the sparrow on Saturday, 1/1/11 foraging with a dozen plus
field sparrows in the same general area that it's been seen.

The Varied Thrush continues on in the same areas, including the
northeastern corner of the ramble at the maintenance shed field &
around the slope just east of the men's restroom there, as well as
wandering a wider circle. At the
Sam Janazzo observed a (living) Dovekie in Jones Inlet this morning. The bird
proceeded over to the WE2 Boat Basin where it crawled up on the sandbar and
expired. The large gulls were attracted to the bird before its demise and
picked at it, with the Dovekie (and Sam Janazzo) putting up a
