A mild and enjoyable day of relaxed yet intensely focused birding led by
Eric Miller produced some surprising numbers but no real rarities for

Hi Everyone,
(I was all over the place today) - saw a total 59 species + heard a Great
Horned Owl.
Highlights were:
Massapequa Preserve: Scaup sp, Ruddy Duck, Hooded Merganser, Pied Billed
Grebe, Hermit Thrush (no sign of the Eurasian Wigeon)
Jones Beach West End: 1 juvenile Black Skimmer, Oyste
Following-up on this post from Sunday: I didn't get bad pictures of a
Goshawk, I actually got bad pictures of a particularly dark sub-adult
coopers hawk. You can check the below link to see the bird that confused me.
The legs should have been the main give away. Thanks to everyone who weighed
in.
Seen at 2:00PM, at The Berm (sandy pull-off along Dune Rd, just east of Dockers
Restaurant) Very cooperative group of five Nelson's Sparrows, four Saltmarsh
Sparrows and one Marsh Wren. All were visible at the same time.

is a Northern Shrike based on barring on the breast that I did not notice while
in the field. Additionally, the width of the black mask seems more appropriate

At 9:15AM this morning an adult Shrike was observed near Jones Inlet west of
WE2 parking lot, tentatively called a Loggerhead on the basis of the rounded
head and black border at the base of the bill. I will post photos this
afternoon. Feel free to weigh in on the ID.
