A RED PHALAROPE was very cooperative today near the Canadian shore of the
Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was very near the shore with
the sunken barge in the background. You sometimes had to walk right up to

Unusual: hoards of Amer. Goldfinches continue at my feeders. I estimate
250 to 300 (my husband commented that they look like swarms of bees). I've
got 15 feeders up and it is not enough, so I'm putting seed on our front and
back porch floors - as I've done
A day spent birding from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn to Jones Beach in
Nassau County with time in various Queens parks before and after produced the
following highlights:
Floyd Bennett Field - Lark Sparrow (seen after I left by others), still in the
same spot
Jones Beach - Northern Shrike
Sue and I spent the morning birding at Caumsett State Park. Highlights included
two calling Common Ravens flying over the parking lot soon after we arrived,
and an immature Red-headed Woodpecker on the west side of the Fishing Road.
Other species of note included a male Wood Duck engaging in

open-country species, from 6:04-10:22AM. In order, we covered Pumpkin
Swamp, Indiana Road, Mount Eve Road, Skinner's Lane, Sidoti Lane, Jados

its way northward along the Carman's River, perhaps the same scoped
individual reported on 11-21 a few miles south, from Beaver Dam Rd. No
other birds of note among the flotillas of Canada Geese and Mute Swans.

The Lapland Longspur continues on the Parade Grounds at Van Corrlandt Park
in the Bronx along with Horned Larks and Snow Buntings.
An American Woodcock was also in the restoration meadows. If you try for
the Longspur, please be aware of the ongoing Cross Country activities.
