I think often times we get too caught up in trying to affix a label on things
even when it is not clear.
As for the "Smew" well at least the NJ folks are keeping a stiff upper lip

Thursday I saw the First-winter/first-cycle Iceland Gull that's been appearing
at the Reservoir off and on since January 30th. The gull was standing on the

I was gently reminded that an adult Iceland Gull had indeed been found
this season - earlier this year - at Central Park in Manhattan: one
was photo'd. at the reservoir there by K. Sheffield, barely a month
ago. Thus we do know there have been at least 2 Iceland Gulls there
this year, &

Around 12:30-1 p.m. at the Central Park (Manhattan) reservoir, an
Iceland Gull was on the water roughly north of the center; many gulls
were quite mobile & there was a lot of shuffling around, as well as
comings-&-goings as I observed. Also still present was the

Adding to the increasing reports on eagles on the South Fork, I had 2
eagles, one definitely a juvenile bald, viewed from Bridge Lane at Sagg
Pond this morning. The 2 tundra swan still present at Hook Pond, along with
numerous Canada geese, 4 common and a dozen hooded mergs, and a few ruddy
duck.
Adding to the increasing reports on eagles on the South Fork, I had 2
