I birded Jones Beach this morning with Bob Veltri and Jeff Ritter, hoping to
see some migrating sparrows. Bob’s intuition to pick Jones was a good one, and
was confirmed by the moderate levels of reflectivity on radar dispersing over
mid long island this morning.
While initially things were
Clay-colored continued today at West End (see map in posting), seemingly 2
individuals. Active in the thickets, but not overly much diversity.

There was a good amount of bird activity at JBSP early this morning. Starting
at dawn, I birded West End then moved east to Zach’s Bay. Shortly after dawn a
calling Dickcissel was observed flying down the beach near the marina parking
area. On the sandbar were some three hundred American Oysterc
A quick walk through Jones Beach turned up highlights of a field sparrow,
northern parula, and a just seen winter wren I spotted by the men's bathroom
facility. I was observing the bird with another birder when it took off under
some cars. Trying to relocate.

Radar showed some migrants crossing the Sound last night. Robert Moses
Field 2 saw a respectable flight at first light, with good numbers but
nothing too out of the ordinary. A lone Rusty Blackbird, a handful of
Purple Finches, and a Blue-headed Vireo were the highlights. Yellow-rumps
were omnipres
First, what a beautiful fall morning. The very tip (Teller's Point) had a
really good flight of chickadees. I must have seen at least 30. Would ascend
pretty high and then alight seemingly repeatedly so hard to estimate numbers
