That is exactly what I mean... High beam indicator is on, yet low
beams are operating. My bf told me this got reversed, but he didn't
understand how, and my Dad pacified him by saying that is how his 48
is.

Ok, I'll check for the disconnected cable. That makes sense!
The actual lamp was smoking. Looked like it was melting on the inside
(smoking), I immediately turned it off. Now it is dis-colored. I
assume its burnt out. I am wondering if the wiring is wrong and this
is the cause.

Not quite sure I understand but if you mean the high beam indicator
is on with the low beams , this means the headlamp pigtail
connectors are wrong at the fiberboard terminal strips in the inner
fender panels , a simple fix .
I believe the " Loadmaster ' pot metal emblems are available
I bet you have NO IDEA how many folks read your missives , I often
copy an entry and sent it around to my non old truck freinds as they
seem to enjoy reading them too .
