I'd say use a 6 point wrench. 18mm perhaps The top nut and bottom ..one is fine threaded nut on a stud, the other bolts in. Don't remember which is which...Never had that problem. Do make sure everything is unhooked electrically, get on it with your wrench.and growl like a bear!

Hello all, I have a 1949 3100 with a 1955 235 engine. The starter recently gave out and I need to remove it. The nuts are stuck. Another problem I'm having is that the 3/4 wrench fits loosely and the 11/16 wrench won't fit. Anyone else have this problem? thanks roland Ole Chevy and GMC t
