Let me add to the subject a little of what I think I know and something that I
do know for sure. Since the rear axle we're discussing is a Hotchkiss style
design, I'm assuming that is where the "HO" designation began. I do know that
the 72 designates the 7200 pound load capacity of the rear axle
from 4:57 to
4:10 so no longer have the original.

it was a 50 or 72. The 5000 lb and 7200 lb ratings refer mainly to the load
carrying capacity of the rear axle as an entire unit because the outer wheel
