Let me add to the subject a little of what I think I know and something that I do know for sure. Since the rear axle we're discussing is a Hotchkiss style design, I'm assuming that is where the "HO" designation began. I do know that the 72 designates the 7200 pound load capacity of the rear axle

I don't think that the center section has any markings that designate whether it was a 50 or 72. The 5000 lb and 7200 lb ratings refer mainly to the load carrying capacity of the rear axle as an entire unit because the outer wheel bearings and brakes etc are different. I'm thinking that origina
