I do not see why you would need to have to use an older version of
Virtualbox from Oracle releases.
Is there anything we can assist you with your setup, If you where using
virtualbox from Oracle releases, you can easily upgrade to the OI
release and keep using existing VM's.

That sounds like a version mismatch between guest tools and Host
Virtualbox. Can you make sure the guest has only the pkg provided
virtualbox extensions installed? And not the ones via ISO.
