You definitely _don't_ want to use S3 for raw volume storage -- that's why they released EBS in the first place. I would start with the PDF linked in the first URL below. I don't know if anyone's created an OI AMI yet but I'm still using hardened OpenSolaris images without issue. http://blogs.sun.
