VBox preferred size will grow if one of its children's preferred sizes grows.
It will be down the the parent node of the VBox to react to that and make the

My understanding is alpha and opacity are same just different range.
Opacity is 0.0 to 1.0
Alpha is 0 to 255

I feel it's possible to emulate native well enough that vast majority of users
would not notice. But I don't think it's commercially viable as the cost to
create and maintain is just too high. I worked for years with apps using Swing
native LAF and later on worked on Swing team on LAFs
You can set skin classes from CSS so should be able to do everything you could
with Swing and more. With just a CSS file and skins as and when needed.
