Hey, on the bright side, you are doing your job. I wouldn't get too shook up
about it.

So I listened in to most of the call and it seems that, more likely than
not, that the OGB is going to dissolve. My festering question is as
follows... if and when we turn the so-called steering wheel over to Oracle
for the community... what exactly will entail? Does this mean that we lose
control
What I mean is, with Oracle having full control, would a fork be less likely
to happen? I am afraid that Oracle could take draconian measures to keep
things bottled up. Just my two cents.

HAHA... Slashdot is at it again. I quote the website...
rubycodez writes Oracle, having acquired Sun Microsystems, including its Unix,
will no longer give away free Solaris licenses. Oracle also states that some
features of its Oracle Solaris will not appear in OpenSolaris, which means
Appreciated! Hopefully folks can muster up the strength to be patient, become

Hello!
I am really considering to give a talk about OpenSolaris at the Ohio Linux
Fest 2010. Would I need to get special approval for something like this or to
use the trademarks, etc.? Thoughts anyone?

Yeah... replacing the legally encumbered bits over time isn't that much of a
stretch. What matters is that the kernel is open-source (which is the heart of
the OS and is the part that makes it stand out apart from Linux and BSD).

bsdfan... trolling is counterintuitive to our mission. Also, OpenSolaris is
quite excellent even in the dev channel in terms of stability and whatnot. I
think you were hired by Beastie to be the rile-master. :p

I did not submit any real details yet. I just submitted a brief summary stating
an idea of what I am to give a talk on. I can always narrow the focus and (if
accepted) I will present more details at a later time, however I was limited to

Hello all:
As of late, I have begun to notice increasing levels of pessimism and
grumbling amongst users (and former users) of OpenSolaris. As a glasses
half-full type, I would like to remind everyone that whining and complaining
about petty issues such as a delayed release for OpenSolaris
Exactly! And there is nothing holding Oracle back from adopting the Red Hat /
Fedora model of doing business. I actually would be surprised if Oracle did
anything to kill OpenSolaris as it would be a tremendous blow for public
relations. :)

It could be that too many nerds and geeks believe in the slashdot god and
panicked when slashdot announced the possible demise of OpenSolaris. Seriously
people? You trust a source that is based on user contributions? :p

Hi!
Given the rate at which OpenSolaris is changing in terms of new features and
tweaks to the OS as well as the recent closure of SXCE, will a new 2nd edition
of the OpenSolaris Bible be a possibility?

Hi:
Is USB 3.0 currently supported natively by OpenSolaris or will support be
merged into the operating system down the line? I just recently ordered a
Gigabyte motherboard with an onboard USB 3.0 xHCI controller. Heck, linux has
native support for USB 3.0 as of 2.6.31. Just curious.
Hey thanks for the tip Peter. I will have to float on the channel and listen in.

Just out of curiosity, since OpenSolaris is indeed an open-source project, if
Oracle decides to let it rot on the vine, can the community just take it from
Oracle and continue development without the corporate tie-in? After all,
open-source projects should be able to persist on their own,
I wonder... will this work with a Palm Pre over a USB tether? If I plug my
phone in with usbnet enabled within the Palm Pre, the phone's ethernet gadget
is recognized by the Driver Utility. It would be super if I could get this to
work. Thanks!

Hmm... hey dude, you might want to check out the downloads section on Wine's
project website (http://winehq.org/) and, lo' and behold, is a link to the

at least there is something to try.

Hi... I am a concerned user of OpenSolaris who fears the distribution will be
called off as soon as Oracle completes acquisition of Sun. Is this true? I know
they may change the license of some Solaris technologies from CDDL to GPLv3...
but will they reconcile the need for an OpenSolaris distro
