Well when the rising tide pulls back to sea, we will see what is left of
Solaris proper.

if that is your attitude wayne then I suggest that they just close down this
discussion group and be done with it. Like many people have mentioned before if
you don't like the piper's tune, then don't listen to it.

Adidas said But, osol should recognise resolution as many other OSes recognise
it properly.
Well that might be the case for other OS'es (Windows) but remember at heart
Solaris/Opensolaris is a server grade OE (Operating Environment) and does not

Just for your info you have an RS880 integrated video card (HD4200). You will
have to ask the others on here about getting it to work at your desired
resolution, but it is a graphics card that released after 2009.06 was
published. I would try to use the latest dev distro 2010.b134 from
and you aren't any better for posting that comment. And for the record my post
to your goodbye serenade was just a goodbye to the faint hearted.

Shatten,
Then do what the OP is doing and leave! We discuss what we love and if
there is bad things said then you filter through what you like and don't like.
We all love Opensolaris/Solaris otherwise we would not even comment on its
current situation.
So if it bothers you then don't
Like the past poster said nothing is available past b134, but if you already
have a build installed before b134 just use pfexec pkg image-update less
quotes to upgrade your BE (Boot Environment) to the latest build i.e. b134.

I would just like to have an up to date (in security terms not necessarily in
features)
OpenSolaris release in the next few months. We are already using b134 which is
6 months old now as the latest release available except the roll your own
flavor, and I have been holding off with b130 of SXCE
Apparently Ed you have been gone since the beginning of the Opensolaris
movement, because Murdock and Company were doing just what you saying is not
true, they wanted an OS that ran on laptops and could still be a top running
server OS. If they did not want only a server OS why go to all the
Well I don't think that policy works in this instance since:
1. Most if not all features are shown through the ON portal.
2. This is supposedly a respin of b134 so everyone knows whats coming.
3. If they did not want to have anyone know about futures releases they would
shutdown their Open
and from a
social standpoint and it really amazes me with the total disregard for the
human aspect of communication.
Can't wait to see the new goodies or the refined goodies from 2010.1H when ever
it arrives since I am not so savy to compile the ON sources and experience b142.
yeah I know someone
Well if you would open your eyes, you can see even with Linux the old UNIX

One thing they might not want to do right away is to learn to compile code. It
is kind of a scary transition. Believe me I

Maybe this will cool some heads in this forum and help to alleviate some

To Herzen this If you use OpenSolaris, you should know how to build
applications from source. is a presumptuous assumption.
Just because people use and Operating System/Environment does not mean they
have vast technical expertise. Some people are just hobbyists that like to try
out or use
The obvious solution to this problem is to remove the Open from the name
Solaris and we would not have an issue at all. This is the reason there are
issues, keep the source code with the OpenSolaris name and the binary distro
should be renamed Solaris Next pre-beta or something of the sort.
Hi there,
I recently decided to switch to any unix-based OS from windows. I chose
opensolaris, I got its C.D. from my friend (and because I've got too slow
internet, I can't really d/l ubuntu, fedora or any other linux distro).
Installation of OpenSolaris went fine, but now I'm stuck while

I have successfully completed the core system update after the initial install
but only on version 2009.06.
As for the 2010.02 preview I cannot get the package manager to work at all. It
gives me the same error message as above.
So can I ask for some help now?

well that only answers part of my question, if you read it throughly and not
get an attitude, I also cannot get the package manager to update or install
from the software repository so I need a bit of assistance there also.
openoffice or any other software for that matter with out the time out
so is there a reason that you have to use this line? should this not be
something simple to have already programmed into the package manager? The
install really pauses and then ramps up and then pauses again and over and over
until it finishes or stalls and fails to download.

I have successfully installed both Opensolaris 2009/06 and 2010/02 preview but
the only thing that I can get to work for upgrade or install/update are the
core system files for the 2009/06 distro. For the 2010/02 I cannot get anything
to update. I am updating over a wireless 11b network. I
Whether linux gets ZFS or not, you can count the days until linux gets
something LIKE zfs. So if opensolaris will go to the dogs just by giving
away zfs, it will go to the dogs anyway after enough time.
BTRFS is still far off in future. I mostly just want to see OpenSolaris to

Why are the fonts in Solaris doesnt look as crisp as in Windows XP? I have
